The VASERlipo® system is an ultrasound-assisted liposuction technology that is designed to target fat while leaving other important tissues intact. It combines mechanical and acoustic fragmentation/emulsification of fat to optimize procedure speed and efficiency while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissue.
The VASERlipo® system works through a process involving the following stages:
- Infiltration: Tumescent fluid containing small gas bubbles is infused into the targeted fat tissue. The tight junctions between cells within blood vessel walls and connective tissues prevent the gas bubbles from affecting these tissues.
- Fragmentation: Acoustic energy is delivered through an ultrasonic probe, resulting in the rapid formation and collapse of bubbles in the tumescent fluid. This process, known as cavitation, dislodges clusters of intact fat cells. Grooves on the ultrasonic probe also generate strong localized fluid forces, further separating the dislodged fat clusters into smaller clumps through a process called acoustic streaming.
- Aspiration: A small-diameter cannula is used to suction out the mixed fat cell and tumescent fluid emulsion. This process is designed to minimize trauma to vessels, nerves, and the fibrous tissue matrix.
- Retraction: The removal of adipose tissue creates space for retraction to occur. The skin naturally retracts and re-drapes to the underlying frame during the healing process, especially when the superficial fatty layer is thinned with minimal trauma and the elastic subcutaneous connective tissue matrix is preserved.
The VASER® system includes several components designed to enhance the liposuction procedure:
- VASER® Ultrasonic Amplifier: This device efficiently fragments fatty tissue using continuous and/or pulsed wave energy. It also has a display to track activation time.
- VentX® Infiltration & Aspiration Console: This console provides quiet and efficient removal of fatty tissue with precise suction pressure control to preserve fat cell viability.
- Precision Fluid Management™ System: This system simplifies and precisely tracks fluid by measuring infiltrate volume up to 4500mL.
- Replaceable Suction Filter: This filter traps any overflowing fat/fluids.
- Universal Canister/Utility Rack: This rack has adaptable sliding slots for attaching up to four 1,250cc collection canisters or other utilities and accessories.
- Peristaltic Infiltration Pump: This pump allows smooth infiltration that is adjustable and reversible.
- Wireless Footswitch: This optional feature allows untethered positioning for convenient and easy control over infiltration and ultrasound activation.
The VASER® system offers several benefits compared to traditional liposuction:
- Decreased surgeon fatigue
- Enhanced skin retraction
- Less pain, swelling, and downtime
- Less post-operative discomfort
- Ability to treat multiple areas in a single procedure
- Results seen as early as 1 week with precise sculpting
- Minimally invasive yet powerful enough to eliminate large areas of fat, and gentle enough to treat more delicate areas.
The VASERlipo® procedure involves the following steps:
1. Tumescent Infusion: A tumescent fluid is infused into the targeted fat tissue.
2. Fragmentation of Fat: Ultrasound energy is used to fragment the fat tissue, dislodging fat cells.
3. Fat Removal: The emulsified fat is gently removed using a small-diameter cannula.
4. Tissue Remodeling: The removal of fat allows the skin to naturally retract during the healing process.
The provided sources do not specify the duration of a VASERlipo® session. However, it is noted that VASER® can treat multiple areas in a single procedure.
It is important to note that VASERlipo® is not intended for significant weight loss, and the volume of blood loss and endogenous body fluid loss may affect patient safety. The sources also list contraindications and cautions for using the device.
